If I were to suddenly show up in Ames in a week or so, does anyone know of a cheap place I could stay until Aug 1st? Like... really cheap, or will take an IOU on rent?

We might let you stay there in exchange for general slave labor like painting walls, carrying boxes and other such tasks...and maybe a small contribution to the cost of utilities. :)
Definitely email or call Tony and ask him about it.
