"While you were out"
Have you ever seen the show on TLC, "While you were out?" Well, the concept is one spouse tricks another into going on a trip by themselves and the other spouse stays home and redecorates one of the rooms in the house while they are gone. The five of us Sokoll kids (and Jason and Belle) decided to do a complete makeover of my parents first floor of their house while they were vacationing in Haiwii for two weeks for their 25th wedding anniversary. We did this all on our own (meaning without TLC's help, but we couldn't have done it without many people at Mars Hill- thanks guys!) (oh yes... my dad did agree to fund it before he left) but we have been planning and conspiring for months to get it all done in two weeks! We have a ton of picutres of the process, but I thought I would post the before and after pictures of their bedroom.
Happy 25th Anniversary Mom and Dad!

In light of all my prego friends...
I wanted to re-post this from Aug 2005! I think I was one of the only people prego now, but maybe more people will connect with it this time around!
You know you are old (or pregnant!) when you grunt slightly either when sitting down or getting up.
-You know you are old (or pregnant!) when the ice pack has become your best friend for lower back pain.
-You know you are old (or pregnant!) when you get heart burn from eating certain foods. (Although I haven't narrowed it down to what foods yet, this just started recently!)
-You know you are old (or pregnant!) when the stores have special parking spots just for people like you!
-You know you are old (or pregnant!) when bending down to paint your toe nails becomes a chore, not something you enjoy doing for girls night.
-You know you are old (or pregnant!) when all your clothes for the bottom half of your body don't have any belt loops and have large amounts of elastic!
-You know you are old (or pregnant!) when people move out of line in the bathroom to let you go ahead of them. (This hasn't happened to me yet, but to my good friend Rachel Meyer :)
-You know you are old (or pregnant!) when your night time routine involves several minutes of getting yourself settled in with pillows everywhere to keep yourself comfortable.
-You know you are old (or pregnant!) when going to the bathroom 4 times per night seems like a "good night!"

I am woman hear me ROAR!
My sister Elizabeth's car was dead this morning. Our car lost the transmission this weekend and we are house sitting at my parent's house because they are on vacation. Whew! Anyway, we were down to three people with three schedules and one car. So we called my brother and he said we should jump it. I pulled the other car around in the garage, we jumped the car and it started! Wow, what an awesome feeling. I did that... no boys did that with me sitting in the car getting warm. I have made a car start! Granted my brother was on the other line walking me through what to do, but that aside, it was all me! Maybe I need to go have a quiet time about being humble.
Anyway, it was exciting and I felt important. The real test will be if I can remember how to do it by myself the next time!

You know you're in ghetto hotel when:
1) You walk in and there is a nasty odor coming from the entryway.
2) The front desk person is behind glass and you have to slide the little window to one side to talk to them. (My guess is that it was bullet proof glass as well, but I was afraid to ask.)
3) The pool is so small it looks like they just took out one of the king size beds and filled the hole with water.
4) The door handle to your room is broken. Instead of resting in a horizontal oosition, it is hanging down. AND when you check in the guys said, "You are in room #102, make sure to life the handle up before you try to unlock the door!"
5) The shower curtain is old and ratty and has a teal tint on the front of it.
6) The shower itself was barely wide enough to stand facing the shower head. I had about an inch on each side otherwise I was going to touch the side or the shower curtain... gross!
7) When you ask for more towels, they tell you that you can only have 2.
8) The top of the bed only comes to your knees.
9) There was only 1 bar of soap provided, so we had to bring it back and forth between the sink and the shower.
10) The continental breakfast consists of two dried out eanglish muffins and a plain begal.
Yeah for adventures! We went away for Jason's holiday party for his company this weekend and we stayed at a Howard Johnson. Not sure I would recommend it to anyone, but it was a nice breather from real life for a little while anyway.
Happy 2nd Anniversary Jason Ross Rohlf! I love you!

Drinking Easter Egg Dye...
One of my friends mentioned to me that vinegar is a natural healer. I can't even remeber all the things she said it helped with, but the one thing I did remember was about colds. She said if you took a tsp in the morning and the night, it would hep you get over your cold faster. (Compaired to something like Zycam I guess.... I have never tried it though). So anyway, Friday I found myself with an itchy throat and sneezing like crazy. I decided to mix a little vinegar into some orange juice to hide the taste. That didn't work. I had Jasos try it and it came out his nose! I was telling my friend Rachel Meyer about it and she said she tried it the last time and just took shots of vinegar. Gross! But drinking a cup full of ruined orange juice was pretty bad. So I tried the nasty fast track and took some shots over the next few days. All I can say is vinegar BURNS!!!! going down, but I can honestly say that I felt so good for having a cold. On Sunday night I stopped taking the vinegar and by Monday afternoon I was sneezing and my face was running again. So I took another shot before bed and woke up on Tuesday feeling much better. So, this is my little soap box! It worked for me and granted it was only once, but I felt very good for being sick and I didn't have to take any other over the counter drugs. Somehow this was appealing to me, probably because I have been more open to "natural" remidies this last year than ever before in my life.

I know I complained...
so I knew I had to report about the incident last week about how they called me to participate in a survey and then they backed out.
Well, after all of that, I received a "I'm sorry" card in the mail today with a $20 gift card to Olive Garden!
Woo hoo!
Yeah for going out to eat on Valentines Day!

Bummer man... he delivers...
I received an email from my friend about a survey (about laundry detergent) that you could fill out for a research company. The company was legit and if you were chosen from all the surveys to participate in a 20 minute interview at Walmart in Cedar Rapids, then you would get compensated for your time... $75!!!
Needless to say, I filled out the survey yesterday and got a call this morning that I was chosen and if I could make it to CR next Tuesday at 10am, I would be interviewed and then receive my $75.
Then 4:30pm today happened. The same lady called me back and said she had a clarifying question on my survey.
Here goes:
Molly- "Leah, I am sorry to bother you, but I have a clarifying question on your survey. I just need to ask you one more time one of the questions."
Leah - "Ok."
Molly- "What laundry soaps have you bought in the last 12 months? Both liquid or powder."
Leah - "Arm & Hammer" and "sun" - a Walmart brand
PAUSE
Molly - " Yeah... unfortunately, that disqualifies you from our survey."
Leah- "Well, how did I get picked in the first place, that is what I answered online?"
Molly - "I'm sorry this happened, it was a date entry error on our part. It doesn't happen very often, but it did today."
Leah- "*Sigh*...
Molly- "I want you to know Leah that I am going to do everything in my power to get them to send something to you. Can I get your address?"
Leah- "Only if they send me $75 for their error!" (Ok, I didn't send this, but I really wanted to be a pill and say it to her. Anyway, I gave her my address. Part of me is expecting a .$50 coupon for Tide or something. Oh well, whatever (if anything) I get is more than I had earlier today.
A classic lesson of old : Don't count your chickens before they hatch.

I feel like Rainbow Bright...
My sister and I learned how to foil highlights and lowlights from our friend Mrs. Windham. We both had her help us with our hair a few weeks back. I had low lights put in, they were supposed to be red, but they are more like purple. However, they aren't all that noticiable if you didn't know that I did it. Then yesterday, Elizabeth and I foiled my mom and put her highlights in for their vacation to Haiwii and they turned out great! We had extra color left, so I did a few more highlights in Elizabeth's hair and then she did them all over my head. So now I have copper and red in my hair. Way exciting. I am still not sure these are the exact colors that I wanted, but I am more concerned about the technique than getting the color perfect at this point. Elizabeth and I have made a packed that niethere one of can leave now without the other one coming along. That way we only have to buy the color and the other one can do the highlights for free.
A fun hobby and a great way to save bukoo (sp?) bucks!
