Movies
So, it's no secret that I like movies...in fact I'm kind of surprised that I haven't really blogged much about them. But, I have been hooked on them for a long time! I am not sure what it is...maybe it's the fact that the screen is so big that I don't miss the details...maybe it's that going to a movie forces you into the experience of it all...I don't know.
Back home we call "going to a movie," "going to a show." The first time I can remember going to the show was when I got to go to "Vice Versa" with my dad. I remember seeing the comericals for it on t.v., and wanting to go so badly, then going to a matinee with my dad. I can't remember how old I was, or how it came to be that it was just me and dad...but it was wonderful! I loved the feeling of it...even of being blinded by the sun as we left.
Even now, going to a movie might be my favorite form of entertainment. And, if I have to watch it at home...I guess that's okay too. I don't do scary movies 'cause I can't handle it (I mean, I had nightmares after "The Wizard of Oz"...she was one scary witch!) And, I don't like my generations stupid comedy films (read: American anything, and sex-based humor). But, I'm pretty much up for most movies. Granted, I check www.screenit.com, and if it passes my personal standards, I'll go.
Last night, my dad and I went to the show on a bit of a whim...and it brought back memories of my first real movie, and it was a lot of fun! We saw Tom Hanks' new movie: "The Terminal." It was good. Probably the best performance out of Hanks since "Forrest Gump," and quite possibly an Oscar contender (if my vote counts).

I'm a big movie freak too. If you go to my blog and the "About Me" page, you'll find I have a whole section about my favorite and most influential movies. Some of them are foreign-language movies, but they come with subtitles.
I often go to movies by myself. Is that so wrong? For instance, if on a Saturday I get my "to do list" finished earlier than expected, I might treat myself by saying to myself, "Self, I'm taking you out to a movie ... and buying you some popcorn (no butter) and a small diet Pepsi." "Thank you," my self says to me.
Haven't been to a theater in a while. Last one I saw in the theater was Troy. OK. Last movie I purposely sat down to watch purposefully on DVD was Big Fish. I recommend Big Fish. Makes you think about the relationships between parents and children and also living life "in color" as I am wont to say.

D Dan, I haven't seen 'Big Fish' yet, but it's mostly due to lack of motivation...I'll put it on my list.
Matt, you've seen it?

I actually really like the movie. The only problem is Nicole Kidman in questionable outfits, that and it presses all the wrong emotional buttons for me. But it is a classic plot line, and great music.

Ooo, I must say that Moulin Rouge is one of my favorites... I was confused through the entire thing during the first viewing, but after multiple viewings it becomes MUCH better -- you can actually figure out the plot and then enjoy the crazy cinematography and music... but it seems to be one of those movies that you either love or hate.

So, I know that you're suppsed to get through the opening sequence of the movie and it gets better, but I don't think I could force myself to do so, I found the images to be distasteful and not something that I would have any urge to desensitize myself to, so I left the movie. It wasn't sorth the fifty cents I paid to kill the curiosity...I actually asked for a refund.
